Brandon Thomas, the developer who drew attention for cloning Adobe's apps with AI, has released free open-source alternatives to Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, built with Anthropic's Claude.
According to Decrypt, the apps are called WordCraft, GridCraft and DeckCraft. They are written in Rust and run on Windows, macOS, Linux and in a browser. Thomas calls it a clean-room rebuild, written from public file-format specs and the originals' behavior without copying Microsoft's code. GridCraft supports 513 of Excel's 523 worksheet functions, but the team rates WordCraft about 60% and GridCraft about 50% of the way to replacing the originals for real work.
A Polymarket post on the release passed 14,000 likes. Replies ranged from calling the apps "unusable" to pointing out that LibreOffice already exists.
