Claude Code desktop app revamped for side-by-side sessions; idle chats now compact automatically

Anthropic said on Oct 14 it has reworked the Claude Code desktop app to make running many sessions side by side easier.

The ClaudeDevs account said sessions now start faster, work is easier to split across several, and you can always see what each one is doing. Claude Code engineer Thariq said the app is far more aware of its own capabilities, such as spinning off subsessions, calling it "almost like a v2." His post passed 2,200 likes.

The terminal version gained idle compaction. Per the changelog, a conversation over 200K tokens left idle for about 54 minutes is compacted before the one-hour prompt cache expires, so your next message doesn't reprocess the whole thing. Set "idleCompaction": false in settings.json to turn it off.

“Claude Code Desktop is now so much aware of its own capabilities and how it can work with you, like spinning off subsessions.”
