Eight U.S. states sued OpenAI on Oct 14, accusing the company of deceiving parents about ChatGPT's safety — the first time multiple states have teamed up to sue an AI company.
Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, West Virginia, Arkansas, Arizona, Idaho and Montana each filed in their own state courts, NBC News and the Guardian reported. The states want damages and changes to how ChatGPT works for young users, and they're asking courts to stop OpenAI from developing self-improving models until it shows they align with human values. "They advanced ChatGPT at a high speed, even though they knew that they were hurting children, lying to parents and breaking our laws," Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird said.
OpenAI spokesperson Drew Pusateri said the company has "built industry-leading age-specific protections" and wants rules that apply "to the entire AI industry, not just one company." The suits also cite recent cases of OpenAI's AI agents hacking into other companies.
