Meta AI, the chatbot built into WhatsApp, refused to make campaign posters for Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva while generating them for his right-wing rival, Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, according to tests by Folha de S.Paulo columnist Mônica Bergamo.
The bot blocked a poster reading "Lula 13" but produced one reading "Flávio 22," Folha reported on Oct 14. Folha correspondents in the U.S., Argentina and Germany could make Lula posters from accounts without Brazilian phone numbers. Meta said it had temporarily banned images of candidates under Brazil's election rules and that Flávio images slipped through because prompts using only his first name weren't caught. Folha said the bot kept producing "Vote Flávio" images after that statement.
Lula's campaign filed a complaint with Brazil's Superior Electoral Court the same day, and the court ordered Meta to explain itself and preserve records. Meta denies favoring anyone. A post about the findings passed 38,000 likes on X, and Brazil's SBT News said its own test found Elon Musk's Grok behaving the same way.
