Money & marketsDisney to pay $60 million a year to hire 66 staff from bankrupt Character.AI

Disney will pay $60 million a year to hire 66 employees from AI chatbot startup Character.AI, which filed for bankruptcy protection.

According to Business Insider on Oct 16, the terms appear in a Chapter 11 filing by Character.AI's parent on Oct 13. Disney is also setting aside a $30 million retention pool and expects to spend $180 million on compensation and retention over three years. Of the 66, 56 have already resigned from Character.AI and 10 are waiting on work visa updates.

Disney hired Character.AI CEO Karandeep Anand as its first company-wide tech chief in September, and laid off several hundred workers, including some in tech, two weeks ago.
