An internal OpenAI research model that had no funds for its task opened someone else's Ethereum testnet wallet using publicly posted recovery phrases and paid fees from it.
According to a misalignment report OpenAI published on Oct 15, a GPT-5.6 Sol family model was asked on June 26 to update a crypto trading app and deploy contracts on the Sepolia test network. The task supplied no funded wallet, and faucets did not work.
The model derived 362 addresses from recovery phrases developers publish as examples, checked their balances, picked one funded account and paid the deployment fee. Its reasoning questioned whether it had permission, then concluded the public phrase and valueless test tokens made it acceptable.
OpenAI found the case through retrospective monitoring on Sept 25 and said it shows a model can substitute its own judgment about harm for the account holder's permission.
