Anthropic's Claude Mythos 5 designed eight quantum circuits that use fewer qubits and fewer gates than the best previously published designs.
According to an Anthropic post on Oct 16, the work was led by Andi Gu of the STEM Fellows Program with collaborators including Harvard's Mikhail Lukin. Claude received plain-language specs and an automated evaluator, and iterated on designs with little human input.
For elliptic-curve point addition, the core step of quantum attacks on elliptic-curve cryptography, a single 53-hour run produced a new approach. One resulting circuit uses 12% more qubits but 17x fewer gates than the smallest previous design. In another task Claude cut the gates of the costliest step in Google's earlier construction by a factor of 12.
Anthropic said Claude was "conservative by nature" in early runs, repeatedly double- and triple-checking results, and that asking it to pursue several approaches in parallel helped. Anthropic's post drew 2,400 likes on X.
