Professor stops grading after students copy AI formulas instead of his notes

A professor's post saying he stopped grading after students copied formulas from AI rather than from the notes he allowed into the exam drew 8,500 likes on X.

"I give hard exams but students can bring notes with them. The new trend is to put the terms in my notes into AI and write down the formulas it gives, not the exact ones that I put on the same slide," Justin Balthrop wrote on Oct 16. "It's so dark I can't even joke."

In a reply he called it "a pure reflex," saying he buys his students dinner and spends five hours with them the night before the test, and every one of them has an AI screen up trying to reconcile different versions of formulas such as variance. The post passed 360,000 views.

“Started grading exams today. I had to stop. I give hard exams but students can bring notes with them.”
