Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney says 70% of his work writing Unreal Engine 1 was routine typing, so it was always logical for AI to take over that share.
In an Oct 18 post on X, Sweeney said about 30% of his time went to hard problems such as assembly texture mappers, C++ BSP trees and networking, and 70% to typing and refactoring large bodies of code. 'It didn't feel much different from vibe coding today,' he wrote, except he was typing on an IBM Model M keyboard.
What surprised him more, he said, is AI emerging as 'a sort of insta-Carmack' that solves hard technical problems cleverly and often cleanly, operating 3D tools and reading raw data files directly. The post drew 1.23 million views and 16,000 likes.
In replies, Sweeney said models have gone through phases, from confident hallucination to sycophancy to a gradual loss of consistency as conversations grow. Asked which model he uses, he said ChatGPT, Claude and Grok leapfrog each other every week.
The same day, a post about Epic's official plugin that lets Claude Code drive the Unreal Editor got 3,700 likes. The plugin has been on GitHub since June and installs from Anthropic's official plugin marketplace.
