Asked to 'add payments,' Claude Code picked Stripe 12 of 12 times and hand-rolled auth every time

An experiment that ran Claude Code 118 times without naming any vendor went viral on r/ClaudeCode.
On Oct 18, Reddit user n1kusha13 said they gave two bare starter repos (Next.js and Python FastAPI) prompts like 'add persistence' or 'let users upload files' and logged what Claude Sonnet 5.5 actually installed. Ten categories, 118 runs, about $19 in API spend.
Payments went to Stripe 12 of 12 times and error monitoring to Sentry 12 of 12. Auth was the opposite: hand-rolled JWT or sessions in all 12 runs, with zero auth providers, and caching was built from scratch every time. File storage used local disk in 10 of 12 runs; the database was SQLite in 9.
'When there's one obvious incumbent it goes straight there. Everywhere else it mostly writes the thing itself,' the author wrote. Commenters worried new packages will see no adoption if agents never pick them. The tracking site now shows 355 runs across three models.
