The trend of owners letting Claude Code hack their own gadgets has jumped from smart TVs to e-readers.
Developer Adrian (@adriandlam_) posted on Oct 18 that he plugged his Kindle in over USB and let Claude Code jailbreak it, removing Amazon's bloatware and installing Tailscale. The post passed 380,000 views and 7,000 likes. Articles he saves to Readeck now sync through his home server straight to the Kindle.
The TV posts keep spreading. A user who had Claude Code remove 25 Xiaomi packages from his parents' TV and write a new launcher drew a warning quote-post with 1 million views and 7,000 likes: 'Do not explain the process. They own a lot of things with model numbers.' A repo called dumbtv, which you point your agent at to set up an ad-free TV, got 4,100 likes.
One widely shared thread (2,800 likes) argued the trend squeezes TV makers that earn money from home-screen ads and user data, though ads inside streaming apps stay put.
“WARNING: if you hack your parents' TV with claude code, DO NOT explain the process. they own a lot of things with model numbers. you will regret it.”
