Linux creator Linus Torvalds says rules against AI coding tools are 'idiotic.'
According to Startup Fortune, Torvalds told the kernel mailing list on Oct 15 that banning AI-assisted code is idiotic and treating AI differently from any other developer tool is 'utterly stupid,' comparing it to banning compilers or text editors. What matters, he said, is whether the person submitting a patch understands it.
The kernel is also retiring its 'Assisted-by' tag for commits written with help from a large language model. Linuxiac reported that only about 10% of the 18,533 non-merge commits in Linux 7.3 carried it.
The X post sharing the news got 4,400 likes and the story topped r/singularity for the day. Others are going the other way: the Godot engine banned AI-written code and agent pull requests in June. Torvalds himself posted a Claude Code-assisted kernel performance branch on Oct 13.
