KoreaKorea plans to make YouTubers label deepfakes too, in an AI Basic Act revision
Korea's government plans to extend deepfake labeling duties to AI users such as YouTubers, the Seoul Economic Daily reported in an exclusive on October 11.
The science ministry is drafting an amendment to the AI Basic Act. The current law only requires AI providers to clearly mark deepfake content that is hard to tell from reality.
Officials say AI cannot judge whether its own output looks real to humans, so providers would have to visibly label everything to comply. The plan is to have users who create and distribute deepfakes insert watermarks themselves.
Fines for violations are suspended until at least January 22 next year.
