LawsuitsUSA Today's publisher sued OpenAI for 250 million dollars
USA Today Co has sued OpenAI for copyright infringement, Press Gazette reported on October 9. The publisher says OpenAI trained on hundreds of thousands of articles from its 19 publications, including USA Today, The Tennessean and the Detroit Free Press, without permission or payment, and it is seeking $250 million in damages.
According to the complaint, the WebText dataset OpenAI built to train GPT-2 contained more than 160,000 entries from its titles, 83,266 of them from USA Today. The company argues that when ChatGPT reproduces or repackages its articles, readers have no reason to visit the original sites or subscribe. The Seattle Times, Newsday and Wikihow have also sued OpenAI in recent months.
