Story 4 of 5

Codex now drafts your next message, and Pro users just press Tab, with no usage charged during the beta

OpenAI added composer predictions to the Codex desktop app in beta on October 9. When Codex finishes a response, it reads the current thread and puts a suggested next message in the composer. Press Tab to accept it, then edit and send; accepting never sends on its own. It is available to personal ChatGPT Pro users aged 18 and over, in local and SSH threads running GPT-6 Astra or GPT-6.1 Sol.

During the beta, generating predictions doesn't count toward Codex usage limits or consume credits. It is on by default and can be switched off under Settings, General, Composer, Show predictions. It is day five of Codex's 28-day run of daily releases, and Codex lead Tibo Sottiaux said the predictions are often so on point they cause a double take. On X, some users said Claude Code has had the feature for a while and complained that it is Pro-only.
