KoreaA YouTube video cloning comedian Yoo Jae-suk's face and voice with AI passed 100,000 views, and a lookalike channel popped up after it vanished
A YouTube channel that used an AI-generated face and synthetic voice of Korean TV host Yoo Jae-suk to read out family stories posted a video that passed 100,000 views, the Segye Ilbo reported on October 9. Yoo never appeared in or recorded any of it. The channel disappeared after viewers reported it, but a similarly named channel, listing Vietnam as its country, appeared soon after. A channel impersonating trauma surgeon Lee Kook-jong had a video with more than 600,000 views.
YouTube bans impersonating public figures and runs a tool that detects AI-generated faces, but detection doesn't mean removal: the person has to review the video and request takedown, and voice-only clones need a separate privacy complaint. Korea's AI Basic Act, in force since January 22, puts its labeling duties on AI businesses, which makes it hard to act directly against impersonation videos uploaded by individuals.
