Epic Games told developers on its Disney shooter featuring Marvel and Star Wars characters to switch to an 'AI-first' production model.
A director on the game wrote in an internal message that there would be 'no more hand-written code' and that all art would be 'generated with full AI workflows,' Bloomberg reported on Oct 12. Kotaku said the team was told to use Anthropic's Claude models.
The game, planned for March 2027, has been delayed over slow progress and understaffing. Disney invested $1.5 billion in 2024 in a partnership that includes the project, and Epic laid off 1,000 people earlier this year.
CEO Tim Sweeney wrote on X that a 'huge pivot' is underway to retool for AI acceleration, aiming 'not to do the same stuff with fewer people, but to build MORE and BETTER stuff.' To a reply saying he couldn't read the room, he answered that much of the room 'wants it to be 2016 again, but it's not.'
“'“No more hand-written code,” one of the game’s directors told staff in an internal message reviewed by Bloomberg.”
