A proposed class action accusing McDonald's of using an AI-driven pricing system to effectively coordinate menu prices across its franchisees is getting attention on YouTube.
ABC News' Oct 19 explainer, "What to know about McDonald's federal lawsuit over AI," passed 29,000 views. ABC's Brian Buckmire walks through the allegations, and food industry analyst Phil Lempert explains how tech is changing dining.
Per PYMNTS, the suit was filed in federal court in Illinois on Oct 15. Plaintiffs allege McDonald's pooled confidential transaction data from independently operated franchises and company-run restaurants to generate pricing recommendations, reducing price competition between them. Deloitte is also named, accused of building a "Strategic Pricing Analyzer" franchisees used to evaluate recommended prices. An Illinois consumer, Michael Thomas, filed an earlier class action against McDonald's on Oct 2. None of the allegations have been proven in court.
