"They fired two engineers and gave me a 2-hour Claude Code meeting": a $26K sysadmin says he now does three jobs
6 views
A sysadmin who says he makes about $26,000 a year wrote that his company fired two engineers earning over $80,000 each and handed him their work, along with a two-hour lesson on Claude Code. The post hit No. 3 on r/ClaudeCode on Oct 19.
The poster, who says he lives in Spain, was hired as a mid-level sysadmin. After the company let go of a cloud architect and a full-stack developer last month, he inherited all their projects. When he told his manager he wasn't an advanced programmer, the fix was "a TWO-HOUR meeting to teach me how to use Claude Code."
"The worst part? It's actually working. Sort of," he wrote, describing a company knowledge base he built for the AI. He added that he's "constantly terrified" people will realize he's "holding this together with AI-generated code and a prayer," and that he feels "less competent the more I rely on AI." Three jobs, one salary, he said.
The top advice in the comments: ask for $80K, since the company is still saving money, and be ready to walk. The account is one person's claim and doesn't name the company.
