A 49-year-old Brazilian bricklayer sold everything he owned and traveled more than 1,200 miles to meet a woman he fell for online, only to find she was an AI-generated character.
Dexerto reported Oct 19 that Edimar Rocha Martins of Imperatriz fell for a TikTok account called 'Jéssica Oliveira' in 2020. The account, with more than 300,000 followers, showed a woman on a farm looking for a partner and promising to support whoever moved in with her.
He sold his belongings on Oct 9 and reached Belo Horizonte two days later. He never found her, learned from a local radio station that she was AI-generated, and took a 50-hour bus ride home.
'Sometimes, loneliness at home can cause a lot of problems in a person's life,' said Martins, who had lost his mother. Per UOL, the account's operator denied ever talking to him directly and said the character was made to drive engagement and promote products.
Dexerto's post passed 6,200 likes, and Korean broadcasters including JTBC also covered the story.
