Claude Code background subagents' status-line cost down 99%: same limit buys about 6% more prompts

Anthropic changed Claude Code so background subagents use less of the usage limit. ClaudeDevs said on X Nov. 5 (KST): "A running subagent updates its status line every 30 seconds, and each update used to re-read its whole conversation. Now Haiku 5.5 writes it from short notes instead, so each update costs about 99% less." The post passed 10,600 likes and 480,000 views.

In a follow-up, ClaudeDevs said the subagent itself keeps its own model. Sessions with background subagents used about 5% less of the limit, so the same limit gets about 6% more prompts. It is live for most Pro, Max and Ultra users and everyone on Team and Enterprise; update to v2.1.316 or later. Anthropic's Lydia Hallie noted it is CLI-only; the desktop app does not write this status line, so nothing changed there.

The 5% saving is for sessions that use background subagents, so results will vary. It lands the same day Apple was reported to be cutting employee AI budgets, when AI coding costs are a live topic. CLI users can get it by updating Claude Code to v2.1.316 or later.

“Background subagents in Claude Code now use less of your usage limit.”
