OpenAI said Nov. 4 it will acquire Pierre Computer Company, a developer tools startup whose technology is already embedded in Codex. Terms were not disclosed.
SiliconANGLE reported that Pierre runs a cloud service where AI agents store the code they generate; the company says it cut code-retrieval latency for customer Lovable by about 70%. Its open-source libraries Trees and Diffs underpin Codex's interface: Trees adds search and drag-and-drop to folder sidebars and flags recently changed files, while Diffs highlights changed lines side by side or inline. OpenAI will keep offering both under open-source licenses and plans to integrate Pierre's paid code-hosting features into Codex.
Axios, which had it exclusively, framed the deal as OpenAI "targeting Microsoft's GitHub." GitHub has faced reliability problems and outages as AI coding took off, and competitors may be looking to capitalize. Earlier this week OpenAI revealed Pando, an engine built to handle the flood of code from AI agents. Axios said OpenAI is moving "beyond helping developers write code toward controlling more of the infrastructure where that code is stored, reviewed and shipped."
The tone inside was light. Codex's Tibo Sottiaux wrote "Computers have RAM, right? Welcome Pierre. Let's reinvent everything" (about 3,000 likes), and OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman said Pierre's open-source tools "already power parts of codex today." A user who said he was Pierre's employee number 8 called it "the best acquisition OpenAI has ever done."
