OpenAI launches ChatGPT Images 2.6 with GIFs and 50% faster generation

OpenAI released Images 2.6, an upgraded image generation model, in ChatGPT, Codex and the API. It can make animated GIFs and generates images 50% faster than before.

OpenAI said in a Nov 4 blog post that Images 2.6 is available across all ChatGPT and Codex tiers on web, desktop and mobile. Developers get two API models, GPT-Image-2.6 Flare and Sunburst. At low quality, Flare can produce an image in as little as six seconds, while Sunburst keeps characters, products and brand details more consistent across edits at medium or high quality, the company said.

OpenAI said users create 4 billion images a week, more than half a billion a day, across ChatGPT, Codex and the API. The API also gains image markup for pointing to the exact spot to edit, plus SVG export. DesignArena reported that Sunburst ranked No. 1 on Image Arena, overtaking Image 2.5 Sunburst.

“Images, upgraded—introducing ChatGPT Images 2.6. Now with GIFs and reference images. Plus, two new models are coming to the API with 50% faster image generation.”
