OpenAI CEO Sam Altman changed his X display name to "Ram Altman" on Nov. 4 (KST) and posted "i want you to have so much ram / lets build more" after criticism of remarks about memory in personal computers. The post passed 5,400 likes and 960,000 views.
The remarks came from the "Cheeky Pint" podcast. Notebookcheck, reporting Oct. 30, quoted him: "From a global allocation perspective, actually, it's quite terrible to have everybody have a bunch of the world's limited supply of DRAM sitting in their own computer and being used 5% of the time. You want maximum utilization in the cloud if you're trying to deal with this very supply-constrained environment." Notebookcheck noted the argument focuses on local AI inference and ignores other reasons people need RAM, such as gaming and multitasking, and that memory makers prioritizing data centers is pushing up PC prices. TechRadar headlined it "he can pry it from my cold dead hands."
Altman followed with a second post, "i actually do want the world to have tons of memory and people to put as much as they want in their computers, and it is fucking annoying that this was taken out of context. i have been arguing for the world to ramp up memory production for a long time" (about 5,900 likes). IGN called it a response to the backlash.
The memes moved faster. A post showing the renamed account, captioned as a joke paraphrase ("Sam Altman 2 days after saying nobody but him should own the global supply of RAM"), drew 22,900 likes and 330,000 views. Threads about the rename and Altman's "180" were among the top posts on Reddit's r/ChatGPT and r/OpenAI. His clarification drew about 440 replies. On Nov. 5, Codex team member Tibo Sottiaux joked about it in the Pierre acquisition announcement: "Computers have RAM, right?"
