OpenAI said on Oct 13 (US time) that it found a hidden recording device in its San Francisco office, used its own AI models to identify the employee who planted it, and that the FBI has arrested the person.
In a statement on its official X account, OpenAI said it used its models to understand the device and where it came from, and determined that a specific employee had planted it a few days earlier. It said it has no indication the person improperly accessed or exfiltrated model weights, source code or customer data, and that the employee was terminated. OpenAI called the case an example of how AI can help counter sophisticated security threats.
According to TechCrunch, the US Attorney's Office for the Northern District of California charged the Saudi national with using an electronic device to intercept oral communications. He was fired and arrested on Oct 9 and faces up to five years in prison if convicted. Prosecutors said the device was plugged into a USB port behind a television, and that a camera OpenAI had placed caught the employee looking behind the TV.
OpenAI said the device had advanced encryption, audio monitoring and a data-transfer mechanism designed to evade monitoring. FBI Director Kash Patel said the scheme was to 'capture sensitive communications about the company's super intelligence technology.' The employee joined last July and worked on the product team.
