Ting-Wei "Willy" Sun, a contractor linked to Super Micro Computer, pleaded guilty on October 9 in federal court in Manhattan to illegally exporting servers containing advanced Nvidia AI chips to China, Reuters reported. He admitted to four counts, including conspiracies to violate US export controls, smuggle goods, defraud the United States and obstruct justice.

Prosecutors charged Sun and two others in March, including Super Micro co-founder Yih-Shyan "Wally" Liaw, with conspiring to divert about $2.5 billion worth of US AI technology to China without the required licenses. According to the indictment, the scheme began around October 2023, and the US manufacturer is widely believed to be Super Micro. The company repeated that it was not named as a defendant and that the case has not affected its business; it fired Sun and cut ties with the other defendants earlier this year.
