Nvidia is in early talks to deepen its investment in Reflection AI, a US startup building open-weight models, or to acquire it, the Financial Times reported on October 10. One option on the table is hiring key staff and licensing the technology rather than buying the whole company, which could sidestep a lengthy regulatory review, according to the FT.

Nvidia is already a major backer, with $800 million invested. Reflection AI was founded in 2024 by two former Google DeepMind researchers and released its first open-weight model, Beam, on October 5, taking on low-cost Chinese models such as DeepSeek and Kimi. The FT says the company works with the Pentagon and the Department of Energy and has agreements to build AI models for US allies including South Korea.
