EducationA '99 with AI' brag forces 600 Korean students to retake an exam, and proctors are told to spot AI glasses by eye
About 600 students in a Konkuk University general-education course will retake their midterm in person after one student bragged online about scoring 99 with AI's help, JTBC reported exclusively on Oct 23. The newscast on YouTube passed 21,000 views.
According to JoongAng Ilbo and others, the Oct 19 online exam was proctored and recorded live over Zoom. Afterward a post on a campus community claimed the writer scored 99 by listening to answers from an AI. The professor told students that others "didn't take the exam honestly because they were stupid or worse at using AI," and scheduled an in-person retake on finals day.
Korea's national college entrance exam next month faces the same worry. KBS reported on Oct 22 that after several students were caught using smart glasses at university essay exams, the education ministry told proctors to identify suspicious glasses by eye, drawing backlash (8,300 views). More than 550,000 students sit the exam. One teacher said she had never seen AI glasses and feared complaints if she wrongly accused a student.
The top comment (12 likes) joked: "Is this the college entrance exam or a mid-level ninja exam?" Teachers' groups want radio-signal detectors as in China, but Education Minister Choi Kyo-jin said that is not feasible this year.
