Arc, once pitched as the Chrome alternative, will stop working on Dec 22.
The Browser Company said on X on Oct 22 that "keeping a browser secure takes constant, dedicated work that is only increasing in the age of AI," and that its engineering and security teams will focus on its AI browser Dia. The post passed 1.1 million views.
Per TechCrunch, the wind-down has three stages. New Arc accounts can no longer be created as of Oct 22. On Nov 23, Arc Search on iOS and Android loses its AI features. On Dec 22, Arc stops working on Mac and Windows, and account data is deleted within 30 days. Passwords, bookmarks, extensions and history move to Dia, where AI is optional.
Users weren't happy. "OPEN SOURCE IT YOU COWARDS" drew 3,400 likes, and "Dia is not the same as Arc. Arc is better" drew 1,300. CEO Josh Miller has said Arc can't be meaningfully open-sourced without also releasing ADK, the internal kit that powers Dia. Atlassian bought The Browser Company for $610 million last year.
“We've decided to sunset Arc on December 22, 2026. That's not an easy sentence to write.”
