A Panasonic Holdings employee uploaded personal data on about 330,000 current and former employees and their families to an outside generative AI service the company bans.
On Oct 23, according to Nikkei and Kansai TV, Panasonic said a member of an HR system rollout project uploaded employee numbers, home addresses, phone numbers and email addresses in late September in breach of company rules. It was not a hack. The data covered about 75,000 current employees, 178,000 people who have left the company since 1978, and 81,000 family members listed as emergency contacts.
Panasonic said the AI provider told it training on the data was switched off, so it would not surface in answers to other users, and no misuse has been found. The employee deleted the chat history and local files after the upload was discovered, and the company reported it to Japan's Personal Information Protection Commission on Sept 29. The X post sharing the news passed 3.3 million views, with replies mocking a leak that needed no hacker. In 2023 Samsung restricted generative AI use after engineers pasted source code into ChatGPT.
