CopyrightFrom 'Ring of Fire' to 'Big Yellow Taxi': publisher Reservoir sues Suno and Anthropic

Independent music publisher Reservoir has sued AI music service Suno and Anthropic for copyright infringement.

Per Billboard on Oct 22, Reservoir filed two federal suits on Oct 21 in the Northern District of California, alleging the companies trained on songs including Joni Mitchell's "Big Yellow Taxi," Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire" and Madonna's "Papa Don't Preach" to "replace the artists." Per Digital Music News, the Anthropic complaint covers 853 works and alleges direct infringement, circumvention of access controls and removal of copyright management information.

An Anthropic spokesperson told Billboard, "We disagree with the allegations and intend to defend this case vigorously." Suno declined to comment. This week Anthropic also argued in a separate case with music publishers that training on lyrics is fair use.
