Designers changed 250,000 lines of code in a year: "design is the new code" and what teams are seeing

"Designers' contribution to the codebase." Replit CEO Amjad Masad posted that line with a chart on Oct. 27: over the past year Replit's design team merged 765 pull requests into the company's web repo, changing 250,004 lines. The line sat near zero until March, then climbed steeply. Microsoft's Windows design team, Figma's CEO and Ramp's engineering lead are saying the same thing about designers shipping code with AI. We gathered posts, videos and Korean examples.

Designers changed 250,000 lines of code in a year: "design is the new code" and what teams are seeing
  1. Replit's design team: 765 PRs in a year

Masad's chart counts pull requests Replit's design team merged into the replit/repl-it-web repo from Oct. 16, 2025: 765 PRs and 250,004 lines changed (additions plus deletions). The line jumped in March and got steeper after August. Replies joked about the first PR from sales titled "small change, urgent" and asked for the product managers' chart.

  2. Windows design chief: designers contributing code fixes directly

Diego Baca, Microsoft's VP of product design, wrote that AI has already helped the design team accelerate significantly and that designers are contributing directly to code fixes that improve craft, consistency and quality. Windows Latest, relaying the post to 570 likes, hoped it would finally fix Windows 11 looking like three operating systems stitched together.

  3. "We hire designers, not engineers"

Clueso co-founder Akash Anand explained why the startup hires designers but no engineers after its Series A: with AI, designers can ship code directly. The design team owns the whole frontend, from idea to production. "If your primary job is translating designs into React components, your role is rapidly becoming obsolete," he wrote, adding that frontend engineering's value is moving to architecture, performance, code quality and review, and engineers are still needed for reliability and security.

  4. Figma CEO: "Design is the new code"

On the All-In podcast released Oct. 19, Figma CEO Dylan Field said "design is the new code": as coding models improve, differentiation moves up to design, brand, boldness and the emotional reaction a product creates. He added that he isn't saying you don't need engineers; Figma definitely does. The video passed 100,000 views.

  5. "Engineering 100x, design 5x": a widening gap

Ramp engineering lead Hamid Dadkhah said AI has given engineering a 100x boost, product 10x and design 5x. That imbalance strains teams: engineers merge many changes while overall UX gets less coherent, and designers burn out keeping up. Calling design a deep craft, he said Ramp is building tools to give designers a 200x boost. The reply drew 700 likes.

  6. Pushback: designers build prototypes

Rogie, a design engineer of 20-plus years at Figma, agreed AI lets designers build great prototypes or small apps, but said engineers think in systems in ways designers often don't. Hand-written code fading is engineering changing, not ending: "Long live engineering." A reply noted designers think in design systems but often miss what happens when things break, like a retry that charges someone twice.

  7. Pushback: but did the product get better?

After Figma's Config, one designer asked whether all the talk of shipping with AI and designers raising PRs actually made users happy or hit business goals (338 likes). A reply: a team whose design output was bad before AI will be bad after it, just faster. Designer Oykun's quip, "Designers using AI to code. Developers using AI to design. Now everyone's mediocre at each other's job," drew 760 likes.

  8. In Korea: "an hour, no Figma mockups"

Korean YouTuber DesignerDDD showed building a lighting-brand site with Claude Code in an hour without a single Figma mockup: write three documents first (plan, UX structure, visual direction), make the materials, then assemble. He calls "AI-looking" design the average result of vague instructions. FEConf 2026 on Oct. 24 also featured Figma's Code Layers and MCP demo and Remember's three-person team building without a designer.

  9. The tools designers use

An X list of Claude Code "UI skills" for design engineers passed 940 likes. Design education channel UI Collective ran the same prompt through Claude Design and through Claude Code with a design skill; it called the Claude Design result clear AI slop and said the skill version produced bolder layouts. The video passed 55,000 views.
