A claim that 10 minutes of AI help makes people give up faster spread on X as a 'new study'. The paper was first posted in April.
Polymarket's Oct. 27 post drew 1,300 likes. On arXiv, 'AI Assistance Reduces Persistence and Hurts Independent Performance' was submitted Apr. 6 and last revised Oct. 13, by Grace Liu and four co-authors.
In randomized controlled trials with 1,222 people on math reasoning and reading comprehension, AI help improved short-term performance, but people did worse without it and were more likely to give up. The authors say current AI is built to give instant, complete answers.
Replies were jokes: 'I reject the premise that I need any help to give up' (134 likes) and 'I gave up after 10 minutes and asked AI to summarize it.'
“JUST IN: New study warns that just 10 minutes of AI assistance can "erode motivation," leaving people more likely to give up when forced to solve problems without AI.”
