A post claiming Anthropic lost $104 billion in the first nine months of 2026 on $33.24 billion of revenue went viral on X, and replies quickly pushed back that most of it is an accounting loss on convertible notes.
The account @brewmarkets posted the figures on Nov. 3 (about 1,000 likes, 64,000 views). One reply said $94 billion of the $104 billion came from changes in the value of convertible notes, "which is just a paper loss." The post does not cite a source for the nine-month numbers.
The first-half numbers from Anthropic's draft IPO filing, reported by the WSJ, are different: revenue of $16.3 billion (about 15x the year before) and a net loss above $80 billion, of which $72 billion was accounting charges tied to convertible notes and other instruments. About 25% of revenue reportedly came from two customers without long-term contracts.
Anthropic is aiming for an IPO this month. The valuation floated earlier was around $2 trillion; investors at the investor day discussed about $1.5 trillion. Anthropic did not respond to a request for comment.
