Google will switch off Gemini and Google Search by default for K-12 student accounts, and schools that reject AI will lose Search for their students too. According to 9to5Google and others on Nov. 3, Gemini, Gemini Notebook, Gemini in Classroom and Search stay off until an administrator turns them on. The unusual_whales account relayed the news citing The Wall Street Journal; the post drew about 2,000 likes.
Search goes dark because it is deeply integrated with AI features, and Google confirmed that students at schools with AI off get no Search. Google told The New York Times that in early 2027 schools will get two options: one with AI Overviews and other AI features, and one with Guided Learning in their place. Guided Learning is meant to get students to work through problems rather than receive answers; the Classroom version launched globally on Nov. 3 and a Search pilot starts this month in select U.S. schools. One reply joked that kids "finally get the full 2005 internet experience."
