Shigeru Miyamoto, creator of Super Mario and The Legend of Zelda, said generative AI offers "an opportunity to seriously consider what it truly means to 'create'" as it takes over more work.
According to Famitsu, Miyamoto was named an Order of Culture recipient on Oct 22 — the first game creator to receive Japan's top cultural honor — in his 50th year at Nintendo. A two-minute clip of his remarks on generative AI from the press conference, posted by Famitsu on X on Oct 25, drew 450,000 views and 7,600 likes.
Reactions split. One user wrote that AI is useful for efficiency, but areas like games and art that need human creativity are something only people can pull off. Another called generative AI "a rights-infringing tool built on an exploitative structure" and said proper legal regulation must come first.
