WorldPope Leo XIV says AI "must be disarmed" ahead of Geneva autonomous weapons talks

Pope Leo XIV said in an X post on Oct. 30 that artificial intelligence "must be disarmed," urging governments to move toward banning lethal autonomous weapons systems, Newsweek reported Oct. 31.

He said life-and-death and use-of-force decisions must stay under human control and rejected granting AI rights or legal personhood, saying it could obscure human responsibility. He called for international oversight, shared standards and accountability. Talks in Geneva next month include the Seventh Review Conference of the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons. Anthropic said it has been transparent about AI's benefits and "unprecedented risks."
