ChatGPT and Codex usage limits merge in December, measured in tokens; instant chat excluded

OpenAI said that starting in December it will combine ChatGPT and Codex usage limits into one allowance measured in tokens, the units of text a model processes.

According to an OpenAI help page checked on Nov. 1, Plus, Pro and Business plans are covered. The change comes as the agentic "Work" capabilities move into the main ChatGPT experience. How much allowance a task uses depends on the model and the work; more advanced models and complex tasks use more. Instant chat does not draw from usage.

OpenAI wrote that it expects most users won't wait for resets more often than they do now. Combined remaining usage and reset times will show under Settings → Usage. At the limit, users can wait, upgrade their plan or buy credits.

An X post relaying the page drew 405 likes. Its author, LuminaBench, wrote that if OpenAI makes this feel terrible, Anthropic can happily take their money. Replies ranged from "I use ChatGPT chat so much, now I have to switch" to "Anthropic does nothing and wins." A Reddit r/OpenAI post titled "Happy Halloween! Make sure to say goodbye to usage!" also appeared. On Oct. 30, Anthropic renamed Max 20x to "Ultra" and removed the 5-hour limit for verified accounts.

“NOOOOOO ChatGPT and Codex limits are getting merged and it's becoming token based It says instant chat will not consume usage though, if they make this feel terrible Ant…”
