OpenAI has secured only about $11 billion (roughly 14.7 trillion won) in commitments from a new funding round it started with a $30 billion (about 40 trillion won) goal.
Yonhap and Newsis, citing the Wall Street Journal, reported that some large investors were cooler than expected. The round values OpenAI at about $1.25 trillion, short of the $1.4 trillion it hoped for. The overall target was cut to as low as $20 billion, and OpenAI told shareholders it will court wealthy individuals and family offices over the next few weeks.
The WSJ's second-quarter numbers show a wide gap. Anthropic's revenue more than doubled from the prior quarter to $11.6 billion; OpenAI's grew about 18% to $6.7 billion. Anthropic posted a small operating profit while OpenAI's operating loss widened. Anthropic is expected to list as early as next month.
Others are struggling too. AI cloud provider Lambda trimmed its target valuation from $14.5 billion to $13 billion while raising $4 billion before its IPO, and UK-based Enscale is leaning toward pushing its November listing to December. On X, a Financial Times post saying OpenAI cut its funding target by $10 billion amid tech anxiety drew 220 likes, and a WSJ Tech post saying OpenAI raised less than half of its target drew 126.
