USMeta ordered to pay $25 billion in New Mexico Cambridge Analytica case, its largest penalty ever
A New Mexico judge ordered Meta to pay $25 billion for deceiving users about privacy on Facebook, the largest fine ever levied against the company.
Per AP on Oct 21, District Judge Francis J. Mathew wrote: "Facebook promised users that they (the users) controlled their data. This was false." Jurors found in September that Meta committed more than 43 million violations of state consumer protection law. The case grew out of Cambridge Analytica's harvesting of Facebook data during the 2016 election.
Attorney General Raúl Torrez called it "an unambiguous message to Silicon Valley." Meta said the suit "seeks to impose a tax on speech" and that it will appeal.
