Feature · The day AI stocks crashed

$3 trillion vanished in a day: the timeline split between 'bubble over' and 'overreaction'

"The AI bubble burst is underway. Greatest day of my life" (10,000 likes). An hour after Wall Street opened on Nov. 5, $2 trillion was gone and X split between cheers and screams. The Nasdaq fell 5.52% and Nvidia gave back all its 2026 gains. We sorted confirmed figures from rumor, and who brings evidence. This is not investment advice.

$3 trillion vanished in a day: the timeline split between 'bubble over' and 'overreaction'
  1. One hour, $2 trillion: "Democrats popped the AI bubble," 13,000 likes

Per Fortune, more than $2 trillion of market value vanished in the first 60 minutes on Nov. 5. On X the figure spread with posts like "Democrats just popped the AI bubble" (BullTheory, about 13,600 likes) and "US stocks lost $2.5 trillion in the last hour" (about 1,170). These are intraday numbers, not closing declines.

  2. 'Biggest one-day wipeout ever?' AP said biggest since April 2025

A post claiming the biggest single-day wipeout ever, $2.8 trillion, drew about 23,600 likes. Citing AP, Topstar News said the S&P 500's fall was its biggest since the April 2025 tariff shock. 'Ever' is the poster's claim; AP did not say that. Fortune said the Dow was on track for its worst second day after a midterm since 1896.

  3. Nvidia's 2026 gain: zero; of Big Tech, only Apple held up

Kalshi said Nvidia erased all of its market gains this year (about 12,600 likes). Intraday moves posted by Deitaone: Nvidia -8.65%, Microsoft -3.58%, Alphabet -3.11%, Amazon -4.18%, Meta -6.04%, Tesla -10.73%, AMD -16.12%, Apple -0.52%. Korea Economic Daily also said only Apple held up.

  4. "RAM will be worth pennies": a post from the night before, 11,700 likes

The night before, hardware analyst Kepler wrote "the AI industry is actually going to collapse; RAM will be worth pennies soon" (about 11,700 likes). ZeroHedge asked if everyone could afford a frontier-equivalent local model if memory prices crash (about 2,900). Sam Altman's rename to 'Ram Altman' after his 'PC RAM is a waste' remark (Nov. 5 story) fueled the mood.

  5. "Worst possible time for the IPO": eyes on Anthropic

A post saying Anthropic picked the worst possible time for its IPO drew about 3,000 likes. Ed Zitron wrote it may not IPO; the DarioCpx account predicted Anthropic won't list this cycle. A post comparing today to 1997-98 internet got about 1,600 likes. No official announcement exists.

  6. Bulls: 'overreaction'

Per Yahoo Finance, Mohamed El-Erian said the market is overdoing its AI fears. Gerber Kawasaki wrote it's a crazy opportunity for long-term investors (about 1,250 likes). Reuters called it an 'AI storm' pulling tech stocks down $2 trillion. This is not investment advice.

  7. Bears: the root is profitability, not the election

Newspim said experts believe doubts that AI spending pays off had built up and the election was the last nail. Topstar News noted Qualcomm's smartphone revenue fell 26% to $5.14 billion and ARM's outlook disappointed, with the Wall Street Journal saying questions about AI payoff grew.

  8. Not yet confirmed: regulation is not law

Per KFDM, Democrats hold majorities but not enough to override a veto, and President Trump opposes AI regulation. Topstar News said the election does not mean data center construction stops; markets priced future policy risk before actual rules. The exit poll (56%) gives a mandate but no specific bill has appeared.
