Story 2 of 6

Starting today, new Claude Cowork tasks run in the cloud, not on your computer

From October 6, new Cowork tasks on Pro and Max plans run on Anthropic's servers, and the 'Only on your computer' option under Settings > General goes away. Tasks already started on your machine stay there until they finish.

Work keeps running with the laptop closed, and scheduled tasks no longer need the device switched on. Local files are reachable only while the desktop app is open, and only in folders you have connected. The same day, Projects cloud sessions began rolling out the ability to reach into a local folder you approve. For work that must run on your own machine, Anthropic points to Claude Code.

Reaction split between convenience and unease. The line that sessions and files 'live with your Claude account and go where you go' prompted questions about where the data sits and who can see it, and some said it is a big trust ask for anyone working with client code.
