Copyright & creativitySpotify pulled 50 million AI 'slop' tracks from recommendations this year

Spotify said it has taken more than 50 million AI-generated slop and spam tracks out of recommendations this year.

"AI-generated slop and spam don't belong in your recommendations," Spotify said in an Oct 20 post, adding that it has also removed more than 75 million spammy tracks from the platform altogether for serious or repeated violations. Tracks listeners skipped, ignored or said they didn't want were consistently slop or spam, it said.

Artist identities believed to be AI-generated now carry an "AI Persona" label and are excluded from recommendations by default unless a listener follows them. More than 300,000 artists are verified as real people.

Tracks with a high probability of being AI-generated are 10 times more likely to fall below Spotify's 1,000-stream royalty threshold. Separately, Spotify signed a licensing deal with Believe for fan-made covers and remixes.
