ChipsSamsung, SK hynix say HBM is sold out through 2029; PC DRAM price up 4x in a year, Q4 PC shipments seen down 27%
While AI-bubble worries spread in US markets, Samsung Electronics and SK hynix said chip orders are backed up. Per Money Today, SK hynix said on its Q3 call that memory shortage will last through 2030 and major HBM and DRAM products are already sold through 2029. Samsung said long-term contracts will soon fill 60-70% of capacity through 2030.
DRAMeXchange put last month's average fixed price for PC DDR4 8Gb at $27.5, a record and about 4 times October 2025's $7. Makers shifting to HBM and server DRAM squeezed PC supply; Counterpoint expects Q4 global PC shipments down 27% year on year. Intel cut its Q4 revenue outlook.
With production concentrating on AI server memory, PC and smartphone makers' costs are the exposed side. Professor Lee Byung-hoon of POSTECH said prices go up and down but the technology trend has not changed.
