Microsoft has opened a voluntary exit offer to employees in Canada, India, the UK and the US, reportedly covering about 60,000 people, roughly a quarter of its global workforce.
In a Nov. 2 blog post, Chief People Officer Amy Coleman called the Voluntary Exit Offer 'new for us' and said the company would keep helping people focus on the work that matters most and build new skills. The post gave no headcount; Mashable cited CBS News and others for 60,000.
CBS noted Microsoft is expected to spend $175 billion on AI infrastructure in 2026. Mashable read the move as a sign the company wants a much smaller human workforce, while saying it remains to be seen whether AI infrastructure can replace the labor. Not everyone will accept.
The same day, Goldman Sachs was reported to have restricted bankers' AI coding tools, a sign of large firms making different bets on how fast to adopt AI.
