Feature · Fable 5.5
Fable 5.5 isn't out, yet 'code-made animation' posts are getting thousands of likes: is the viral demo really Fable?
'Fable 5.5, it's over for video and image models. This is pure code.' The X post, from Nov. 2, drew 6,100 likes, and a follow-up calling it 'most likely the latest Fable 5.5 checkpoint' added 4,100. But Anthropic's own model docs still list only Fable 5.1 and Opus 5.5. With no official benchmark or price, we followed the demos, rebuttals and comparisons to see what can actually be confirmed.
First, the fact: Fable 5.5 is not in the official docs
Anthropic's models overview lists Fable 5.1, Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5 as current. It advises starting with Opus 5.5 for most work and using Fable 5.1 for hard reasoning or long agentic tasks. Ten days after the rumors covered in our Oct. 23 feature, there is still no launch post, model card or price list. Everything below is user-posted demos.

The spark: one animated short
AI-news account @chetaslua said a long prompt for a 2D Japanese anime scene produced a film-like clip from HTML code alone, with no external images (6,100 likes). It told readers to ask the model, with search and memory off, where Karpathy went in 2026, claiming only the new checkpoint knows. A 66-second short from the same account (1920×804, 24 fps, one HTML file) drew over 2,000 likes.

Amplification: 'the latest Fable 5.5 checkpoint'
kimmonismus wrote that it is 'most likely the latest Fable 5.5 checkpoint' and that 99% of people outside the bubble don't know (4,100 likes). Another user said an 'AGI-feeling' animation took about an hour (773), and a comparison against GPT-6.2 Astra said code-made animation had become 'edible' (632). YouTube channels bundled it as 'Fable 5.5 leak'.
Rebuttal: Opus 5.5 produced the same result
@PawelJLisowski said it was Opus 5.5 on max effort, not secret Fable access, running the same prompt for nearly two hours and using 3% of weekly usage on an Ultra plan. 'Not competitive with image and video models,' he wrote. Another user pointed out that the demo repo's only commit says it was co-authored by Claude Opus 5.5. No direct evidence yet that the viral clip was Fable.
Routed through Opus, or just Opus 5.6?
@TokenGremlin wondered whether Fable 5.5 is secretly routed through Opus 5.5 or Opus 5.6 is simply that good (480 likes), adding that companies A/B test production models so it could be any of the three. A post saying Opus 5.6 ships alongside Fable 5.5 (312) offered no evidence.
Side by side: Argon, Astra, Xenon
@SahilPanhotra posted Fable 5.5 versus Gemini 4 Argon on one task (727 likes). Others shared a Gemini 4 'Xenon' leak claiming it beats Fable 5.5 on nearly every benchmark at the same promotional price (628), without a source. Dylan Patel wrote of Gemini 4 Carbon, 'spikier in domains, but really good in a few areas, official apology to Google' (1,870). There is no shared benchmark to compare numbers.
The 'official confirmation' that wasn't
'BREAKING: Anthropic officially confirmed its next model, Claude Fable 5.5, will be more powerful than previous ones' drew 570 likes. The poster later called it a hashtag parody; a reply said it was like Apple saying the newest iPhone is the best iPhone. Other posts mocked 'the 4th week in a row that Fable 5.5 is about to release' (644).

Animation jobs and the 'LLM hole'
@epsilver_ argued image and video generation research is an anti-pattern that will be absorbed into LLMs (885 likes). Another user wrote that the animation industry looks finished (460). A user who reproduced it with Opus noted the cost in time and usage. A few demos cannot settle whether code-made video replaces dedicated video models.
What you can use today
Per the official docs, the top generally available model is Fable 5.1, with Opus 5.5 recommended for most work. As of Oct. 23 the Claude Code `fable` alias pointed to Fable 5.1. The demo prompt is public, so you can run it on Opus 5.5 yourself, keeping in mind users cannot verify which model answered. Anthropic's only announcements on Nov. 2 were the Residency call and an API feature.
