Anthropic's internal use of Claude, valued at the prices it charges customers, passed monthly employee compensation (excluding stock awards) in April and had grown more than 250-fold by September versus January.
Business Insider reported on Nov. 1 that Anthropic disclosed this in its IPO filing. It does not mean more cash goes to AI than to salaries; it is internal consumption valued at retail prices. Per the filing, more than 90% of code added to its software in September was written by Claude.
An amended filing on Nov. 2 added personnel figures. July–September personnel expenses for 5,300 employees topped $1.7 billion, $1.1 billion of it stock-based compensation, about $322,000 per person for the quarter. Nine-month personnel costs of $4.8 billion were 15% of revenue, versus more than twice revenue in 2023. Headcount is up 5x since the end of 2024. BI estimated revenue per employee at $6.6 million for Anthropic against $3.2 million at Meta and $2.5 million at Google. The filing says "talent density matters more than talent mass."
The story reached two of the top five posts on r/ClaudeAI on Nov. 3. One post's title says Anthropic spends more on "AI employees" than human ones, which differs from BI's retail-price caveat.
In a March piece BI wrote that tech companies are starting to treat AI tokens as a fourth component of pay, alongside salary, bonus and stock.
