Elon Musk has acknowledged that SpaceXAI's coding agent Grok Bot cost too much to serve, just as users complained of burning a week of usage in a day.
On Nov. 1 Musk replied to an X user asking for a usage reset: "the cost of serving Grok Bot was unsustainably high relative to revenue." According to TeslaNorth and Startup Fortune, one user hit 100% of the weekly meter with four days left before reset, and similar reports followed. Musk gave no cost or revenue figures and did not say whether limits changed. Coverage read the past tense as a sign of a deliberate cost adjustment; that is not officially confirmed.
The remark spread fast. Benjamin De Kraker wrote, "Two weeks ago Grok Bot was an incredible success story powering SpaceXai's revenue growth. Now it's unsustainable and loses money (???)" and drew about 3,000 likes and 500,000 views. Another user wrote that the growth hack was "selling a dollar for fifty cents" (about 1,000 likes). Others pushed back that Musk was perfectly clear, and De Kraker replied that it is a publicly traded company and fair game.
Rivals moved the other way: Anthropic removed the 5-hour limit for verified Ultra accounts (formerly Max 20x) on Oct. 30 while keeping the weekly cap. Grok Bot is limited to paid X plans starting at $30 a month, with no free tier. SpaceX raised $85.7 billion in its June IPO.
