Karpathy doesn't read code: developers who put down the terminal on how they use Opus 5.5
"I don't actually do anything resembling traditional engineering anymore (read/write code, run commands in a terminal). I only talk to Claude." Andrej Karpathy wrote that on his blog on Oct. 31. The same weekend on X, a post about dropping Opus 5.5's effort level one notch, a post claiming agents built a JavaScript engine in a day, and the pushback that it's all hype each drew thousands of likes. We checked blogs, GitHub and official docs and sorted it into eight items.

Karpathy's confession: no code, no terminal
In an edit to his HackerTube post, Karpathy said he uses Claude Code (the Mac desktop app) with Opus 5.5 on Medium effort as his default, and no longer reads or writes code or runs terminal commands. He only talks to Claude.
Two hours, 6,454 videos
The result is HackerTube. Opus downloaded every Hacker News comment, had Sonnet filter spam and narrowed them to 40,000 comments recommending a video, grouping 6,454 videos since 2007 into 150 topics. Karpathy's own manual work was an API key, a server and a domain; Claude handled deployment, security hardening and optimization.
"The terminal is the wrong interface"
Developer Yuchen Jin wrote that the terminal is wrong for coding agents and desktop apps are best today, a post with more than 2,200 likes. A reply noted Karpathy says he doesn't read code, so of course he doesn't need a terminal. Anyone wanting to try the desktop app can start with the Code tab in the official docs (item 8).
Is higher effort better? From 'extra high' to 'high'
Developer Theo wrote that Julius convinced him a week or two ago to move Opus 5.5 from extra high to high, and "he was right. This is better almost all of the time" (4,600+ likes). One reply said if you reach for a higher setting you're probably looking for Fable; Theo answered that he uses Fable only for very specific cases.
"An Opus 5.5 agent could re-implement all of CPython"
Armin Ronacher, creator of Flask, wrote that an Opus 5.5 agent could probably re-implement all of CPython within two weeks, without human input, against just the tests (1,900+ likes). Jonathan Blow replied "Press X to doubt." Ronacher pointed to a repository an agent swarm built in roughly 24 hours.
Opening the repo: a JavaScript engine, 99.9% of tests
The djs repository Ronacher cited is not CPython but a small JavaScript and TypeScript engine written in Rust. Its README reports 38,069 of 38,109 test262 active-group tests passing (99.9%); it is faster than QuickJS's wasm build on some workloads and 2.92x slower on higher-order functions. It has 9 stars, and the README does not mention the 24-hour agent-swarm process.
"I want to cancel all meetings to build harnesses" vs. "mostly BS"
Justin Hutchings wrote that he feels he needs to cancel a week of meetings to build harnesses (the execution frames around agents), drawing 1,500+ likes. One reply said that if it were true, things would look very different and it's mostly BS; another said harnesses are already dead.
What the official docs say about the desktop app
Per Claude Code's docs, the desktop Code tab runs sessions in parallel (Cmd+N), opens split view with Option+click and offers `/btw` for side questions that stay out of the main conversation. Cloud sessions keep running after you close the app and can be checked from a phone. Computer use is a research preview for Pro, Max and Ultra only, not Team or Enterprise. Overseas, this overhaul is nicknamed 'Claude 2.0,' though a video description notes it isn't an official name.
