NBC News reported tech stocks erased more than $1 trillion on Oct. 30. The Nasdaq 100 fell 3.4% in afternoon trading, its worst day since mid-June; the S&P 500 fell 1.8% and its tech sector 4.2%. Intel plunged 29%, its worst one-day drop in data going back to the 1980s. SanDisk fell 13%; AMD, Arm, Qualcomm and Marvell fell about 10%; the Philadelphia semiconductor index fell 7.2%. The BBC said Reddit fell 29% after weaker-than-expected user numbers and a warning that Google's AI search is hurting referral traffic.
It began a day earlier, when Alphabet fell more than 12%, wiping out over $500 billion, and Amazon and Intel results failed to reassure. Amazon expects about $220 billion of capital spending this year and "meaningfully more" next year; Intel said the PC slowdown will last through the first half of 2027. NBC said some companies that buy AI models have tightened token budgets and are questioning the payoff. The BBC said Meta, Alphabet, Oracle, Amazon and Microsoft have committed about $800 billion in 2026, and the Nasdaq ended October with its worst monthly slide since March 2025.
Korea felt it too: MBC reported the KOSPI fell more than 5% intraday on Oct. 30, triggering a sell-side sidecar. A post saying Apple passed Nvidia as the world's most valuable company at $5.0 trillion got 1,800 likes on X. The FT report that Blackstone expects Anthropic to stay below investment grade after its IPO was also cited as adding pressure on tech shares.
